Overview of the Upper Extremity in Occupational Therapy

The learner of this course will be taught an overview of the upper extremity related to Occupational Therapy as it applies to a clinical perspective. The course participant will learn about the broad topic of upper extremity rehab through the lens of the OT domain including body structures, body functions, performance skills, and activities that can be achieved when all elements are working synchronously. Working proximally to distally, this course is comprised of a series of videos and audio recordings that will give you valuable clinical insights from a practitioner's perspective so that it can be immediately applied to treatments and interventions. There is 2.5 hours of learning and a graded assessment at its completion when the learner must score an 80% or higher.  The learner will be given a PDF for each lesson to help guide them through the course content in order to bolster learning. As an added resource, each learner will receive additional original handouts with helpful illustrations to guide and support learning.

Course Objectives:

  • Develop and enhance understanding of the occupational therapy practitioner’s role in upper body remediation and rehabilitation.
  • Develop and enhance understanding of the shoulder complex and origination of movement in the distal upper extremity.
  • Develop and enhance understanding of the appendicular skeleton as it relates to bilateral upper extremity structures, functions, and movements and it’s integrative implications on lower extremity function, trunk position, gait, posture, ergonomics.
  • Develop and enhance understanding of common diagnoses impacting the upper extremities and potential evidence-based treatment strategies to use throughout the occupational therapy process to remain occupation-centered while remediating elements of dysfunction and providing solutions to decrease or address activity demands across contexts.
  • Learn and increase confidence in the facilitation of scapular mobility for a variety of diagnoses.
