Balance and Stability Bundle

The Balance and Stability Bundle gives occupational therapy practitioners a practical collection of resources for evaluating and treating postural control, sitting and standing balance, stability, and functional movement. The bundle moves from foundational concepts and postural analysis into graded balance intervention, including static and dynamic sitting, static and dynamic standing, changes in base of support, reaching beyond the base of support, stepping, variable surfaces, dual-task demands, pelvic positioning, and functional mobility. The materials are designed to support clinical reasoning by helping practitioners identify musculoskeletal, neuromuscular, sensory, cognitive, and performance factors that may be influencing balance and postural control before selecting and grading interventions.

Included Resources

1. Balance Home Activity Program
A patient-friendly home activity program that includes chair-to-chair transfers, feet-together standing, eyes-closed balance, reaching outside the base of support, single-leg standing, and marching. The program includes goals, instructions, modification areas, dosage spaces, and safety guidance for completing balance activities at home.

2. Tips to Increase Your Stability
A one-page patient education handout explaining six practical ways to improve stability, including lowering the center of gravity, keeping the center and line of gravity within the base of support, using visual fixation, increasing mass, widening the base of support, and increasing friction between objects and surfaces.

3. Posture Reference Graphic
A visual reference comparing common postural presentations including normal alignment, lordosis, kyphosis, flat back, sway back, and scoliosis. It also includes a visual explanation of forward-head posture associated with increasing cervical flexion during phone use and ideas for beginning postural intervention.

4. Balance Exercises and Progressions Reference
A one-page clinician reference with multiple ways to progress balance treatment, including variable postures and base of support, dynamic movement, resistance training, reduced sensory input, dual tasking, graded reaching, multidirectional stepping, walking practice, heel raises, step-ups, sit-to-stand, and resistance-based progression.

5. Dynamic vs. Static Standing Reference
A visual guide distinguishing static standing from dynamic standing and connecting each to occupational therapy treatment examples. The resource illustrates how changes in center of gravity, base of support, weight shifting, stepping, trunk rotation, and functional movement affect whether a standing task is considered static or dynamic.

6. Standing Balance and Posture Informational Guide
A 7-page clinician resource that walks through evaluation and progression of standing balance and postural control. It addresses static and dynamic standing, structures and functions involved, performance skills, possible interventions, sensory and cognitive demands, gaze behavior, dual-tasking, and progression from sitting to standing. The guide emphasizes identifying the patient’s postural and dual-task capacity before increasing treatment demands.

7. Pelvic Positioning Resource
A 4-page clinical guide focused on the pelvic girdle and its relationship to postural control and functional movement. It reviews sacroiliac joints, the pubic symphysis, the lumbosacral joint, anterior and posterior pelvic tilt, neutral alignment, lateral pelvic obliquity, weight distribution, trunk stability, and compensatory movement patterns. The resource also connects pelvic movement with the entire kinetic chain and discusses how restricted pelvic movement may influence dynamic trunk control and motor initiation.

8. Postural Analysis Checklist
A visual postural assessment tool for examining alignment from anterior, lateral, and posterior views. The checklist guides observation of head position, shoulders, spinal curves, pelvic alignment, iliac crests, hips, knees, feet, ankle positioning, scapular alignment, symmetry, and other postural findings that may influence occupational performance and balance.

9. Standing Posture and Balance Reference
A 4-page clinical reference for static and dynamic standing. It outlines evaluation considerations, common patient presentations, structures and functions involved, performance skills, and treatment ideas such as postural holds, isometric exercise, gaze activities, graded reaching, stepping, variable surfaces, sit-to-stand, heel raises, and progressive changes in base of support.

10. Sitting Posture and Balance Resource
A 4-page clinical reference addressing static and dynamic sitting as the postural foundation for more advanced standing and mobility tasks. It includes common presentations, relevant structures and functions, performance skills, intervention ideas, postural holds, weight shifting beyond the base of support, trunk rotation, reaching, dual-tasking, visual-perceptual demands, and progression toward standing balance.
